It is a Brazilian municipality, The capital of the Amazon state and the main financial center, corporate and economic development of northern Brazil. It is a historical and port city, located in the center of the largest rainforest in the world. It is located at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões river. It is one of the best known Brazilian cities worldwide, mainly by its tourist potential and ecotourism, which makes the city the tenth largest tourist destination in Brazil. Manaus belongs to the meso Amazon center. It stands out for its architectural and cultural heritage, with numerous museums, theaters, temples, palaces and libraries. It is located in the far north of the country, 3.490 km from the national capital, Brasilia.

It is the most populous city in the Amazon rain forest area and the Amazon state, with a population of 1,982,179 inhabitants, according to estimates by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2013, and is the seventh most populous of Brazil and the 131st most populous of the world.

The city gradually increased its participation in the formation of the Brazilian GDP in recent years, rising to account for 1.4% of the country’s economy. In the ranking of the magazine America Economy, Manaus appears as one of the top 30 cities in the line of business in Latin America, ahead of Latin countries capitals like Asuncion, Caracas and La Paz.

Originally founded in 1669 by the Portuguese with the fort of Sao Jose do Rio Negro, And was elevated to the village category in 1832 with the name of Manaos, in honor of the Indian nation called Manaos, being legally transformed into town on October 24, 1848 with City name Cidade da barra do rio negro.

Only on September 4, 1856 again had its current name. It became known in the early twentieth century on the golden age of rubber at that time was named as “Amazon Heart” and “Forest City”. Currently its main economic engine is the Industrial Pole of Manaus. The sixth richest city of Brazil, the city has the largest northern metropolitan area of the country and the tenth in Brazil, with 2,210,825 inhabitants (IBGE / 2010).
